This massive work, which purports to be a metaphysical, physical and technical history of the “two worlds” of human temporal and spiritual life, compiles a wealth of practical knowledge about esoteric things. Fludd trained as a physician at St. John’s College, Oxford, and while there became deeply attached to the philosophy of Paracelsus. Although he was later admitted a fellow of the College of Physicians, he found himself to be a fish out of water in the medical profession precisely because of his ongoing interest in mysticism. This work, for example, draws on the overarching alchemical tradition that theorized the essential unity of all things. Fludd’s cosmology adopted the tri-partite generative principles articulated by Paracelsus: light, from which the element Sulphur (as the Soul) emerged; darkness, which gave rise to Salt (as the “prima material”); and water, which became Mercury (as the spirit). These were the primary elements that comprised matter and that, in their turn, produced the four key qualities of heat, cold, dryness and moistness.
